The Parish of Broughton, Elslack, Martons Both and Thornton-in-Craven

in the Church of England Diocese of Leeds

As this latest edition of The Round goes to print we will have eaten our fill of Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and have begun our preparations for Easter during the season of Lent. The period of preparation for Easter is a time when we are encouraged to focus not on ourselves, but on Our Lord. One way in which some people do this is through the act of fasting; going without some particular food or luxury. The Bible tells us that fasting is one way in which we can draw closer to God. At the start of His ministry Our Lord fasted for 40 days in the wilderness; when seeking wisdom from God both Paul and Barnabas prayed and fasted on behalf of the church elders and we read in Luke 2 that Anna, the prophetess ‘worshipped night and day, fasting and praying’.

Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testaments, Jesus said to His Disciples not ‘if you fast’ but ‘when you fast’ (Matthew 6:16). By fasting we can transform our prayer life, making it both richer and more rewarding. Fasting can also give as some small insight into what it is like to go without. Fasting is not a requirement of us during Lent, but it is one way by which we might feel able to better prepare ourselves for the great festival of Easter.
